Name: K-12 School Program

Age: 5 to 20 years old

Diagnoses: Multiple handicaps (cerebral palsy, mental retardation, muscular dystrophy, epilepsy, autism, seizure disorders, and other health impairments).

Program Description: An educational program approved by the Department of Education and funded by local school districts.

All students have individualized education programs (IEPs) that are developed with the student, parent or guardian, classroom team (Special Education Teacher, Physical Therapist, Occupational Therapist, Speech/language Pathologist, and Educational Technicians) and school departments.

Strengths:

  • High number of staff to student ratio to provide individualized services

  • High level of expertise for students with physical challenges, including use of computer and switches (assistive technology) for programming

  • Flexibility in programming to provide pre-vocational training and community-based activities

  • Consistent involvement and communication with families to enhance student programming

Special Points:

This program is able to meet the needs of students in creative and innovative ways, even providing appropriate peers through integration into community activities.
